In the ancient times when man initially learnt how to live and the
wheel of civilization started moving, he needed to save this information and
memories somewhere. Perhaps it was the time when he too realized the necessity
of writing. Man started knowing the art of writing gradually like everything else
when he felt the need. I am not going to discuss the history of writing and
compiling books. I just plan to highlight that the relationship of book and
human being is as old as human civilization.
The affiliation of man with books remains strong in all the ages
of civilizations. I have an audacity to say that the development and transformation
of culture and civilization was only possible when man gathered his knowledge
in the form of books and preserved it for the next generation. Man had been
learning from his experiences through centuries and was able to establish the
different branches of knowledge. In the beginning, he wrote his information, which
was the result of his experiments, on pages and these were joined together
afterwards. Books always remained the major source of learning and knowledge.
After Johann Gutenberg’s invention of printing press, there came a tremendous
revolution in the field of book publishing and it was established as an
industry.
Books stood shoulder to shoulder to man in his way to progress and
prosperity. Great scholars, intellectuals, reformers, scientists and men of
learning remain very close to books. They not only benefited themselves but
also contributed a lot to their coming generations. The glamour’s progress of
today, the ease and facility in every sphere of life is the result of books
written by great people.
The connection of a common person to books is getting stronger day
by day. The tendency of reading books is taking deep roots. The translation of
the classical books are being published. Different activities are initiated to incline
people to read books. Book fairs are arranged frequently and new libraries are
being setup in cities and towns. The publishers are publishing new books at
large scale encouraging new writers. The quality and standard of these books is
not so bad if not excellent.
Books on lives of great people make us aware of their unique life experiences.
These are a great source of inspiration. We learn more about their good
qualities, their hard work in life, their hardships of the way, their toils and
trials to the destination. They encourage us and instill a new fervor in our
hearts. The personalities become
our ideals and we ourselves try to act the same way unconsciously. The travelogues
take us to the unseen places. We feel walking and travelling with the writer.
The most beautiful places of the world, which we are unable to visit, are
possible to see through reading books.
The fiction is also helpful to measure the moral standards of a society.
It shows the trends and specific problems the society is facing. It also gives an
account of the age in which it is written. The personality of the writer too
reflects in his work. It puts silently and interestingly some valuable idea in
our minds. We can easily be able to understand the individual and collective
social life of the era by some glimpses given by the writer.
The books of science and technology are very helpful for our young
students. The writers of these books are scientists and excelled persons of
their respective fields. They are be able to write these books when their own
knowledge and research is on the peak. These volumes make our students more
proficient in their relative subjects. These books are a gateway to new
inventions and discoveries.
The storybooks for children are helpful to widen their outlook
towards life and strengthen their habits of reading books. They learn many
moral lessons from these books. They can afterwards go a step forward from
stories to academic topics. The elders can also make much from these storybooks
because these are based on deep observation and experience. The books on
history make the man learned, wise, and his decision power strengthens wonderfully.
The history is not only the record of glorious days of some hero but also bring
before us his toils and sufferings, his follies and weaknesses. It is on the
reader to what extent and to what kind of information he gathers from this
ocean of history.
The company of books creates a learned atmosphere. It is a refuge
for those having spare time and wished to acquire a firsthand knowledge of the
world around them. The books save us from boredom and wandering aimlessly.
Whenever you find no friend to talk with, they come to console you and to
enhance your level of information. They are not fair weather friends rather
most sincere that broaden your vision, take you out from superstitions and
wronged beliefs, and create a sense of refinedness, wisdom, honor and
self-respect.
